PRAXIS
Building solidarity across Glasgow
Connecting struggles

Praxis is a new political organisation of libertarian socialists. We aim to work within local struggles and organisations and act in a strategic way to stress what we eel is the way forward for developing autonomy, political independence and the most radical elements—elements which we feel are most likely to lead to victory. We call this social insertion.

We are not looking to become a propaganda group, or replace the national anarchist federations, but we want to seek to develop the class struggle, as working class people, and as participants in struggles for better housing, education, healthcare and employment conditions. We do this by thinking in a joined up way and acting in unison to develop ideas and initiatives in local organisations and movements which we feel will help us move forward, whether that’s arguing against electoralism, or encouraging local tenants organisations to act independently of their landlord.

Currently Praxis is involved in housing struggles, working with others to develop an independent federation of residents groups, which is controlled by those groups themselves, developing the IWW— a historic militant industrial union— to become again today a real fighting association of workers, based at the point of production, as well as working on a range of other initiatives.

We enjoy good relations with a number of similar groups elsewhere, including the Workers Solidarity Movement in Ireland, and we hope to kickstart a debate in the libertarian socialist movement about how we can move the struggle forward, as despite the UK having large numbers of like minded thinkers, and despite the collapse of the Soviet Union and latterly of many of UK’s electoral socialist groups libertarian ideas have yet to gain much currency in the working class as a whole, and what remains of the working class movement appears to be in terminal decline.

We feel it’s time for fresh thinking that aims to tackle these difficult problems head on. We’d like to link up with yourself and others to discuss these and other issues, for the struggles ahead.

  • * Our Mission Statement

We will coordinate our involvement in existing class struggles with the dual aim of improving people's lives and building truly democratic social movements and institutions of and for the working class. We hope that these can become the basis of a new, classless, society. We want a serious approach to combining theory and practise where we set targets and assess ourselves against those targets, and build new theory based on what we learn. No bullshit - let's just see what we can actually do to help, and work towards more working class power. Our strategy and tactics will be based on what works. The community and workplace are both sites of struggle against the ruling class, and struggles in both must be fought. In some workplaces a "red" union such as the IWW may be the best option, in others a democratic network of trade union members may be the better option. These are tatical decisions, not unbending principles. We will settle strategic and tactical disagreements by vote, and act in unity once the issue is settled. We are very interested in involving anyone who agrees with these principles and is serious about the struggle.
